Universitat Rovira i Virgili

The general objective of the Nutrigenomics research group of the URV is the generation of knowledge oriented to the design of functional foods able to prevent, treat or palliate metabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, the research group also aims to obtain functional ingredients from by-products in order to revalue them.

The group has, at its base, a long history of teamwork. It is an interdisciplinary group formed by experts in the field of nutrition and its relationship with different aspects of metabolism (oxidative, lipid, glycemic, etc.).

The group works with both in vitro and in vivo techniques. In vitro techniques allow us to describe and analyze the modifications caused by naturally occurring molecules in the main metabolic pathways and in the gene expression patterns of the tissues most involved in the pathologies studied. On the other hand, in vivo experimentation allows us to verify the effectiveness of the selected natural molecules on the health of laboratory animals in which a pathological situation has been provoked. In order to achieve these objectives, the research group works with the most advanced organic techniques.
